Only the best for my baby!

Welcome to the Milk Mama Diaries Carnival (February). For this month, we focus on back to basics. Participants will share advices – either the best breastfeeding advice they received OR/AND the best breastfeeding advice they can give to new moms.  Please scroll down to the end of the post to see the list of carnival entries.

Today, as I’m struggling to complete this entry, my little 2.8 year old  R is a little out of sorts.  She seemed to have caught the intestinal flu virus that made the rounds in the household.  She refused to eat her usual 3 meals.  But there’s a saving grace — she breastfed all day, almost like an infant again.  I would have been worried sick if she didn’t, because she wouldn’t have much intake otherwise!  It’s easier for her bum tummy, I guess.  Aside from fulfilling her nutritional requirement, I’m also giving her comfort — what she really needs at this moment…and many moments before now.  And, any antibodies that is still produced could only help her.

Breastfeeding is one of the best decisions I made when I gave birth to my firstborn E.  Despite all the doubts, I knew I was going to breastfeed him.  All because “BREASTFEEDING IS BEST”.

I learned that in Medical School.  Yes, despite them teaching us how to dilute formula, they did tell us that breastfeeding is best.  Moms who breastfed were praised in the clinic.  The OB ward had moms who were taught how to breastfeed their babies.  And they were successful.  And I totally believed that I will be too.

I hear that from formula milk ads.  Yes, the blurb that DOH required and lasted a few seconds after a 30 second-or-more commercial for some toddler formula.  There must be a reason for the DOH requirement — the fact that yes, breastfeeding is the most natural and the healthiest.  I totally want THE BEST for my kid.

I heard that from my mom, my MIL and other people from their generation.  Yes, despite the fact that most of us were actually bottlefed and that they had a lot of misconceptions (like my milk not being enough because my kid was not chubby).  They did believe in that, although they also believed that not all moms can.  I believed that I CAN.

It was this belief that made me hang in there and breastfeed despite all the odds.  When my son had to stay in the NICU, I pumped like crazy with the manual pump that I had at the time.  Despite getting a low volume, I didn’t give up, believing that I’d give him all that I can give.  Despite the engorged breasts, despite the pain, the cracking and bleeding of my nipples, it was that belief that made me continue on breastfeeding.

It was this belief that made me breastfeed my eldest for a little before 2 years and still breastfeeding my second for only-God-knows-how-long.

It’s the same belief I want all moms to keep in mind.  Because we are moms and we only want the best for our kids!

Another advise I kept in mind and which I would like to tell other prospective nursing moms — Take it one day at a time.  Because breastfeeding is not easy — at the start.  But it becomes second nature the more you do it.  When it’s painful, it’s difficult to project 2 years, 1 year, 6 months or even 1 month into the future.  I mean, when you feel that you’re being tortured, how can you imagine doing this for at least 6 months?  Just get through the present day.  Then when that is done, get through the next day.  Small achievable goal, right?  Before you know it, you’ll have breastfed for quite a while and can’t imagine weaning!  :)
